Vern Weber wore many hats at Gilmour, including coach, teacher, athletic director, alumni director, colleague and friend. His legacy endures deep within the heartbeat of athletics at Gilmour, the culture of the school itself and within the many athletes he coached during his tenure.
To honor that legacy, a project is underway to fund a bronze statue of Vern, with a football clutched in his outstretched left hand, greeting and cheering on teams as they enter Weber Stadium. While the statue will honor Vern, it will also reflect the many lives that he coached, motivated and changed both on and off the field. It will also provide an inspiration to current students and future generations of Gilmour athletes. Donations will also support signage for Weber Stadium.
The statue was designed by nationally renowned sculptor David Deming, who has also created incredible statues of many beloved Cleveland sports icons, including Jim Brown, Frank Robinson, Larry Doby, Lou Boudreau and Jim Thome. You can view footage of its creation below.
