Shrek the Musical Delights Gilmour Audiences

Grace Madden '24
Gilmour’s Drama Club recently transported audiences to the magical land of Far Far Away with its production of Shrek the Musical. Set in a fairy-tale kingdom, Shrek the Musical follows the unconventional journey of a grumpy ogre named Shrek (Theophany Goudas-Ksenyak '27) as he embarks on a quest to rescue Princess Fiona (Gia Hilal '24) from a tower guarded by a fire-breathing dragon (Amiya Conwell '24). Along the way, Shrek is joined by a talkative Donkey (Lily Prebul '24), encounters a band of misfit fairy-tale characters, and ultimately discovers the true meaning of friendship and acceptance.

Musical numbers like “I’m a Believer” and “Freak Flag” showcased the vocal prowess of our cast, while lively choreography and vibrant costumes added to the spectacle of the production. Behind the scenes, the dedication and hard work of our students, directors and crew members was evident in every aspect of the production. A very special shoutout to Ms. Brown’s Set Design class, who worked tirelessly to create the show’s scenery. Countless hours of rehearsal and collaboration culminated in a performance that delighted audiences of all ages. Despite the challenges posed by staging such a large-scale musical in such a short amount of time, our team’s passion and determination shone through, resulting in an unforgettable production.

Shrek not only entertained audiences but also fostered a sense of community and camaraderie within the Gilmour Academy family, as students from both the Lower and Middle Schools were invited to share the stage. Through their involvement in the production, students gained valuable experience in teamwork, creativity and self-expression. Shrek the Musical was a resounding success and a testament to the passion and talent of the Gilmour Academy community. As we reflect on the memories made and lessons learned throughout the production process, let us continue to support and celebrate the arts as a vital piece of our school culture.

Here’s to many more magical journeys on stage in the years to come!
