Storytelling is at the heart of every culture. It carries history, preserves traditions, and deepens our understanding of one another. This Black History Month, we witnessed the power of storytelling firsthand as Black alumni returned to Gilmour to share their experiences. Through their stories, they painted vivid pictures of their journeys, challenges and triumphs, offering valuable insights that bridge the past and present. Their voices not only honored history but also inspired the next generation to continue shaping the Gilmour legacy.
This week, we also welcome Foreign Language Week, a celebration of the beauty and richness of languages around the world. Each year, we highlight the importance of language learning through a unique theme. This year’s theme, “Once Upon a Time in Every Language,” emphasizes the deep connection between language and storytelling, the foundation of every culture.
From ancient Greek myths to African oral traditions, stories have been a means of passing down knowledge, values, and identities. They teach us about love, resilience, and the shared human experience. Each language provides a unique lens for storytelling, shaping the way we perceive the world. By learning new languages, we gain access to diverse narratives and foster deeper cultural understanding.
As we celebrate Foreign Language Week, we encourage our community to embrace storytelling, explore legends from different cultures, listen to the experiences of others, and share your own. Just as our Black alumni used storytelling to honor their past and shape our collective future, may we all use language and stories to build connections, preserve history, and celebrate the richness of every culture.
Sincerely,
