Gilmour’s Alumni of Color Speaker Series: Honoring Black History Month

This week, as part of our Black History Month celebrations, we had the privilege of welcoming back three outstanding Gilmour alumni whose journeys as students and professionals exemplify the enduring impact of a Holy Cross education. Through their powerful stories, Nia Long ’14, Sara Shoenhagen McFarland ’05 and Michael Alexander-Leeks ’06 reminded us of the importance of fostering a school community where every student feels seen, valued and heard.

Each speaker shared their unique experiences navigating Gilmour as students, the challenges they faced, the lessons they carried with them, and how they continue to embody the Gilmour mission in their personal and professional lives. Their stories of perseverance, leadership and commitment to service reinforced the significance of creating an inclusive environment that reflects the Holy Cross charisms of hospitality and inclusiveness.

Nia Long ’14 spoke about the ways Gilmour shaped her path, instilling in her the confidence and determination to pursue her goals. Sara Shoenhagen McFarland ’05 shared insights into how her time at Gilmour prepared her to navigate the world with both purpose and compassion. Michael Alexander-Leeks ’06 closed out the series with reflections on the importance of representation, overcoming challenges and paying it forward.

Their words were a powerful reminder that our responsibility as a community extends beyond the walls of the classroom. When we commit to inclusiveness, we create a space where all students can thrive academically, socially and personally. We are grateful to Nia, Sara and Michael for sharing their journeys and for inspiring us to continue the work of building a Gilmour where every student feels a true sense of belonging.

As we continue to celebrate our Gilmour culture, next week we will recognize Foreign Language Week, another opportunity to embrace the richness of our diverse community. Just as we honor the voices and experiences of our alumni, we also acknowledge the importance of language and cultural identity in fostering global awareness and connection.

Thank you to everyone who participated in this special speaker series. Let us carry forward these lessons and continue working together to ensure that every member of our community feels seen, valued, and heard.
