The English 7 curriculum integrates writing, literature, grammar, and vocabulary instruction while exploring the essential question, “What makes a hero?” Students explore the thematic focus, “Heroes,” by reading from a variety of genres and analyzing for an author’s use of literary elements in the novels they read as a class. In English 7, students participate in daily writing workshops. These workshops are an opportunity for students to cultivate their writing style by exploring different genres, such as short stories, memoirs, essays, and poems. Students grow into independent writers with a unique voice by working through the writing process of brainstorming, organizing ideas, drafting, editing, and proofreading with the goal of publishing their own literature in mind.
The English 8 curriculum integrates writing, literature, grammar, and vocabulary instruction while exploring the essential question, “What is the relationship between choices and consequences?” Students explore the thematic focus, “Choices,” by reading from a variety of genres, analyzing the novels they read as a class, and exploring different writing genres. In English 8, students work towards the Gilmour outcomes of becoming a lifelong learner and a complex thinker through daily reading workshops and establishing their own unique voice as a writer. There is an emphasis on the writing process, where students grow into independent writers. Students have the opportunity to show mastery of key concepts in the course through personal narratives, presentations, essays, Socratic seminars, and various other projects. The English 8 course is designed to create effective writers, critical thinkers, and competent speakers, all the while fostering a love and appreciation for quality literature
